Director-General participates in ECOSOC Retreat on longer-term positioning of the UN development system

On 29 and 30 May 2015, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova participated in her function as Chair of the High-level Committee on Management (HLCM) in a retreat on the ‘ECOSOC Dialogue on the longer-term positioning of the UN development system in the context of the post-2015 development agenda’. The retreat, which concluded the first analysis and stocktaking phase of the ECOSOC Dialogue, brought together Member States as well as UN representatives.

By Resolution 2014/14, the ECOSOC requested an inclusive dialogue involving Member States and all relevant stakeholders on the longer-term positioning of the UN development system, taking into account the requirements of the post-2015 development agenda. This includes, as stipulated by the resolution, a discussion on the inter-linkages between the alignment of functions, funding practices, governance structures, capacity and impact of the UN development system, partnership approaches, and organizational arrangements.

As the UN development system is collectively preparing for how it can best deliver on the emerging post-2015 development agenda, the ECOSOC Dialogue provides an important forum for the UN development system to engage in an inclusive conversation and develop a shared sense of analysis on key issues of strategic importance for the way forward. The second phase of the ECOSOC Dialogue will begin after the Summit on the Post-2015 Development Agenda in September.
