From 24 to 27 August, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, is on her first official visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan, on the occasion of the 9th International Music Festival “Sharq Taronalari” (Melodies of the Orient), to be held in Samarkand. The Director-General will open the Festival with the President of the Republic, Islam Karimov.
The Director-General will also take part in the opening of the International Conference on Musical Traditions of the Orient in the Context of Contemporary Culture, held with the framework of the Samarkand Festival. This will take place in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Adkham Ikramov, and the Minister of Culture and Sports, Minkhojiddin Khodjimatov.
During her visit, the Director-General is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the President as well as several government officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of educational, health and social protection issues, the Chairman of the Uzbek National Commission for UNESCO, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulaziz Kamilov.
While in Uzbekistan, the Director-General will visit the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, a category 2 Institute established in 1995 under the auspices of UNESCO, the "Samarkand Paper" Traditional Workshop created with UNESCO’s support and the UNESCO Chair on Preservation and Management of Historic Centers at the Samarkand State Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering. She will also visit several educational and cultural institutes.
