The Oceans Compact is strategic vision for the UN to deliver more coherently and effectively on its ocean mandate. It was launched on 12 August 2012 by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as part of his five year action plan.
The Compact will lead to a result-oriented Action Plan that will benefit from the guidance of a dedicated Ocean Advisory Group composed of 20 to 30 members, including approximately 10-15 government representatives and 10-15 high-level policy-makers, scientists, ocean experts of recognized standing, private sector representatives, and representatives of non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations.
A call for nominations is currently open until 15 April to identify the most suitable candidates.
A support group comprising IOC-UNESCO, UNDP and UNEP has been formed to provide secretarial assistance to the work of the Oceans Compact Advisory Group in the coming months.
