Permanent Delegate of the Dominican Republic to UNESCO


H.E. Mr. Rodriguez was born in La Romana, Dominican Republic, in 1954.

H.E. Mr. José Antonio Rodriguez, a songwriter and an architect, was appointed Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Dominican Republic to UNESCO in November 2016.

Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, from 2012 to 2016, H.E. Mr. Rodriguez served as Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic. During his tenure, he managed to generate an extraordinary enhancement of the Dominican culture.

H.E. Mr. Rodriguez is a passionate promoter of culture through his song writing. Known for his sophisticated lyrics and pure melody, he was awarded first place in the Song Festival organized by the Association of Musicians of the Dominican Republic in 1984. In 1986, he was also awarded first place in the International Festival of Viña del Mar in Chile, with the song "Para Quererte".

H.E. Mr. Rodriguez created, together with his wife, the renowned Dominican dancer and artist Monika Despradel, the Foundation "Nest for angels", which deals with issues related to children with cerebral palsy.

H.E. Mr. Rodriguez also founded "Retajila", a Foundation which provides economic and logistic support to young artists (songwriters), helping them record and produce their first album, thus supporting the beginning of their artistic career.
