About the Clearinghouse

What is the Global Action Programme?

To create a world that is more just, peaceful and sustainable, all individuals and societies must be equipped with and empowered by knowledge, skills and values as well as be instilled with a heightened awareness to drive such change. There is now a growing international recognition of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an integral element of quality education and a key enabler for sustainable development. ESD is included in the proposed Sustainable Development Goals, notably in target 4.7 of the Education Goal, and referenced also in the goals on climate change and sustainable consumption. Adopted at the 2015 World Education Forum in Korea, the Incheon Declaration reconfirmed the importance of ESD in the post-2015 agenda.

In 2013, the 37th session of the General Conference of UNESCO endorsed the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD as the follow-up to the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014). Building on the achievements of the Decade, the GAP aims to generate and scale up concrete actions in ESD. The present Roadmap communicates the GAP endorsed by UNESCO Member States (37 C/Resolution 12) to decision-makers, stakeholders and actors, and provides suggestions for the implementation of the GAP, as well as details on UNESCO’s role.

What is the GAP Clearinghouse?

The main objective of the Clearinghouse for the GAP on ESD is to serve as an effective one-stop online hub to foster the ESD global community of practice to share knowledge, experiences and competences.

What can I find on the GAP Clearinghouse?

The ESD Clearinghouse includes general information on the GAP, its objectives and its steps of implementation as well as resources and audio-visual materials from all UNESCO regions (Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe/North America, Latin America and the Caribbean). The GAP Clearinghouse will also highlight the activities and experiences of GAP partners as well as provide links to other existing ESD knowledge hubs to create synergies and catalyze cross-cutting collaboration. Discussion forums and interactive collaborative spaces are also  featured in the ESD Clearinghouse.
