World Tsunami Awareness Day
The 5th of November has been designated by the United Nations as the World Tsunami Awareness Day. This first celebration in 2016 is under the coordination of the United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). The necessary information and events organized as part of this day are posted on the dedicated website: http://www.unisdr.org/2016/tsunamiday. Member States are invited to participate in the Day's celebration. Any information about activities contributing to World Tsunami Awareness Day can be communicated to the IOC Secretariat (c/o firstname.lastname@example.org).
The 5th of November was designated as World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2015 through its Resolution A/RES/70/203. The resolution requested that the United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), in collaboration with relevant organizations of the United Nations system, facilitate the observance of WTAD, starting this year.
The first WTAD will focus on education and evacuation drills.
The main global event for World Tsunami Awareness Day will the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (2-5 November) in New Delhi, India. Many other activities and events are scheduled to take place around the world.
