The Samaria Gorge is the acknowledged natural site and symbol of the island of Crete. It holds a unique and distinguished position in Cretan, Greek and Mediterranean history, as a place that has served throughout history as an ark for life and a haven of freedom. It is also identified with the unceasing production of the material and immaterial cultural heritage of Crete through the ages.

The International workshop is co-organized by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, the Samaria Gorge Management Body and Crete, with the support of the MAB Secretariat and of the Greek MAB National Committee.

The aim of the workshop is to contribute equally to the sharing of good practices for the sustainable development of island and coastal Biosphere Reserves of the Mediterranean region.
