Universiade Almaty: Public Talks with Winners
Within the organization of the 28th World Winter Universiade in Almaty, a meeting between Olympic champions of Kazakhstan and children and adolescents will be organized.
The UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty together with the Kazakhstan National Federation of UNESCO Clubs has initiated the project "Public Talks with Winners", which will allow representatives of vulnerable segments of youth to meet with well-known athletes, holders of Olympic medals in various sports, including Mr Serik Sapiyev, Olympic Champion and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Sport.
One of the objectives will be to popularize sport and a healthy lifestyle among the young participants of the meeting, and to distract them from bad habits, extremist movements and acts of violence. Participants of the world championships will talk about their way to success, the values of sport and the importance of physical education for young people.
In addition, young participants will receive information about free sports clubs and outdoor sports fields in Almaty. On completion of the event everyone will be able to ask questions to his/her idol, to get an autograph and to make a photo.
Today we are witnessing a growing number of acts of a cruelty and violent extremism among young people, and in particular among unemployed and non-resident citizens. In these turbulent times, sport can become a powerful tool for social inclusion, gender equality and empowerment of youth. Its benefits go far beyond athletic fields. Nothing can unite men and women of different cultures more around shared values of fair competition, mutual respect and teamwork as a sport does. Sport and physical education are very important to young people, their health, and participation in civil life.
