In collaboration with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK), the Foresight Section of the Bureau of Strategic Planning is organizing a UNESCO Futures Literacy Workshop on Cultural Heritage from 19 to 20 November 2012 at UNESCO Headquarters.
Within the framework of the European Union’s Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) on Cultural Heritage and Global Change and under the EU Coordination Action “Joint Heritage European Programme” (JHEP), the purpose of the Workshop is to contribute to developing a strategic research agenda for cultural heritage (tangible, intangible and digital) with a primary focus on the foresight dimension. Using the Futures Literacy methodology, participants will be trained to develop the capacity to discover and invent anticipatory assumptions in the field of cultural heritage.

The JPI Cultural Heritage “Vision Document” (2010) has defined tangible and intangible cultural heritage based on the UNESCO Culture Conventions. UNESCO is a member of the Advisory Board of the JPI’s Management Structure. This Workshop also aims to strengthen the anticipatory reflections on the future of cultural heritage as an integral part of UNESCO’s mandate in protecting and promoting cultural heritage.

Participants will include collaborators of the AHRC-UK and a number of UNESCO staff. The facilitators will be Dr Riel Miller, Chief of the Foresight Section, and Dr Martin Rhisiart, Director of the Centre for Research in Futures and Innovation at the University of Glamorgan.
