UNESCO in cooperation with United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) is organising a 3-day training of security forces on safety of journalists and freedom of expression in Mogadishu, Somalia. Based on UNESCO’s Training Manual on Freedom of Expression and Public Order, this event aims at enhancing the safety of media practitioners and combating impunity surrounding crimes committed against them. Participants will be drawn from Somalia Security Forces, and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB).
This training is as a direct follow-up to the implementation of priority 3: Opening lines of dialogue and agreement between media, government and key state institutions with a common strategy to deal with the media.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to implement the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the issue of Impunity. It falls within UNESCO’s framework of promoting an enabling environment for freedom of expression, press freedom and journalistic safety, facilitating pluralism and participation in media, and supporting sustainable and independent media institutions.
