On 17 November a signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNESCO and the Uruguayan Supreme Court, on behalf of the Iberoamerican Judicial Summit, will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The MoU is an important step in reinforcing supreme courts of justice and other relevant actors connected to the judicial system.
The agreement highlights the role of the judicial system in ensuring and protecting fundamental human rights. It reinforces one of the priorities of UNESCO to engage in jurisprudential dialogues and to support specialized training in promoting international standards relevant to protecting freedom of expression, transparency and access to information. Following the signing ceremony of the MoU, there will be a more elaborate discussion, with the presence of Mr Frank La Rue, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, The Chief of Justice of the Supreme Court of Uruguay, Dr. Pérez Manrique, and other interested stakeholders.
