Seminar for the Establishment of a National Bioethics Committee in Paraguay

As a result of the initiative taken by the country to create a Steering Committee for the Establishment of a National Bioethics Committee (NBC) in Paraguay after a resolution from the Minister President of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) of Paraguay dated June 2012, the seminar will gather thirty participants, including international experts, researchers, government officials and professionals in the field of bioethics, health, environmental, agricultural and livestock science, as well as lawyers and journalists.<br /><br />It will consist of two panels. <br /><br />The first panel will present different views on National Bioethics Committees (NBC), a comparative study of the NBC standard building in Europe and the Latin American and Caribbean countries - including the cases of Colombia and Brazil -, as well as the practical experience and background of the development of bioethics in Paraguay. <br /><br />In a second panel, national visions about the creation of a National Bioethics Committee in Paraguay will be held by representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science and Technology of Paraguay, and NGOs.<br /><br />In addition to these sessions, UNESCO will provide recommendations for the creation of this NBC, as well as draw up the document proposing its establishment.<br /><br />Similar meetings were recently held in El Salvador, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica in the framework of the UNESCO’s Assisting Bioethics Committees project, as UNESCO support to capacity building in Bioethics in Latin America.<br /><br />As of March 2013, 13 National Bioethics Committees are established in Latin America and the Caribbean.
