UNESCO for The Maghreb’s regional office organizes within the framework of the programme NETMED Youth (Networks of Mediterranean Youth), the second sub-regional workshop of the "Youth and Media" groups of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. This event will take place from 10 to 12 March 2016 in 7ay Co-working space, in Rabat, Morocco.

The NETMED youth programme, implemented by UNESCO with the support of the European Union, seeks to promote an enabling environment for young people's civic engagement by strengthening the capacity building of the collaborative networks of youth organizations in key areas such as, public youth policies, media, vocational training as well as employment.

The Rabat workshop follows in the work carried out within the Media component, in particular in the observational work of Youth representation in the media in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. The event’s main objective is to conceive collectively a strategy based on awareness-raising activities targeting key players and professionals of the media, to ensure a wider youth representation and to carry actions to help develop media contents adapted to the young people.
The NETMED Youth Programme “Networks of Mediterranean Youth”, implemented by UNESCO with the support of the European Union, aims to build the capacities of youth organizations and to enhance networking among them in order to increase youth’s contribution to the development of youth public policies, to foster youth‘s effective interaction with the media, and to strengthen youth organizations capacities in their dialogue with national stakeholders around public policies such as employment and skills development policies. Designed as a participatory program in all stages – from the design to the implementation – NETMED Youth’s main beneficiaries and key players are youth organizations. In each country, NETMED Youth, from a core group of representatives of youth organizations working together as an engine and a key resource to the project.

In this context, the planned actions under the media component aim at strengthening capacities of the collaborative networks of youth organizations in reflecting on tools that can promote a fair and objective coverage of information concerning youth, their rights, achievements and views in the mainstream media.

In the first phase of the programme, 13 youth organizations in the 3 countries, have been trained and realized with the support of UNESCO a media monitoring on 4 radios and TVs in each country, in order to provide tangible data on how youth are portrayed in the media.

Now and as a continuity, the “Youth and media” group is called on to think collectively for 3 days, and come up with concrete actions of awareness-raising and advocacy initiative to ensure a wider representation of young people in the media. The sub-regional workshop will have as a purpose to implement, on the basis of the preliminary observation report of the media, the operational strategy of capitalization and raising awareness, as a strong signal to the key players and professionals of the media in 2017 onwards.

The Rabat Workshop will bring together members of NETMED networks of the three Maghreb countries Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, a representative of the Mena Media monitoring organization and the UNESCO coordination team in the 3 countries and at headquarters. It will be held in 7ay, a Co-working space, a perfect setting to liberate collective energies!
