MAPAUZ: Management Plans of World Heritage Properties in Uzbekistan
The aim of the training is to enhance local capacities in the management of the World Heritage properties in Uzbekistan. In particular, to elaborate the methodology and agree on the next steps for the preparation of Management Plans for three World Heritage properties in Uzbekistan: the Historic Centre of Bukhara, the Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz and Itchan Kala.
The Republic of Uzbekistan has four World Heritage Properties, namely, the Historic Centre of Bukhara, the Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz, Itchan Kala and Samarkand – Crossroad of Cultures. Also, there are 31 sites on the Tentative List and the nomination dossiers of two other sites, namely Ancient Termez and Silk Roads: Penjikent-Samarkand-Poykent Corridor, were prepared and submitted to the WH Committee.
The World Heritage Centre and the Advisory Bodies of the Committee have provided comments and recommendations on management issues related to the inscribed sites as well as the nomination files submitted.
The overall methodology for the preparation of Management Plans for the WH properties will be elaborated. The presentations and practical exercises will use Samarkand-Crossroad of Cultures, Bukhara, Silk Roads and Ancient Termez as case studies.
Through interactive learning and discussions, the training will aim to:
Enhance knowledge about the World Heritage Convention (1972)
Improve understanding about the World Heritage, in particular:
o Values, State of Conservation and Threats, National Context;
o Legal Framework, Boundaries and Management Plan/Systems;
Elaborate the methodology for the development of three Management Plans;
Identify and discuss the main management challenges of the World Heritage properties in Uzbekistan.
