Launch of a Global Coalition for the Protection of Cultural Heritage “Unite4Heritage"
On 29 June, the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova, as well as other high-level speakers, will address the World Heritage Committee during its 39th session in Bonn (Germany) for the launching of a “global coalition for the protection of cultural heritage”.
Building on a number of resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council, the UN general Assembly as well as by UNESCO’s Executive Board, which call on all actors to engage for the protection of cultural heritage during conflicts and to fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural properties, UNESCO is launching in Bonn a global coalition of partners, with an aim to strengthen international mobilization and coordination of all concerned actors from a broad range of different sectors.
The event takes place immediately after the end of its morning session, during which the Committee may adopt a decision based on the resolution taken by the UN GA on Iraq, tabled by Germany and Iraq.
Statements by the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova, the Chairperson of the World Heritage Committee, Ms Maria Böhmer, the Iraqi Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Adel Shirshab as well as by other high level speakers are expected. In the framework of the #Unite4Heritage awareness-raising campaign, moreover, a short video will be showed followed by a press conference.
