Launch event of the project 'Empowering rural women in Mafraq Governorate through the management and preservation of Umm el-Jimal’s archaeological site in Jordan as income-generating activities'
Under the patronage of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, in partnership with al Hima Foundation for the Protection of Jordan’s Natural and Human Heritage and The Umm el-Jimal Project, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and its Department of Antiquities, launching event of the UN Joint Programme between UNESCO and UN-Women 'Empowering rural women in Mafraq Governorate through the management and preservation of Umm el-Jimal’s archaeological site in Jordan as income-generating activities'. The event takes place in Umm el-Jimal, with the participation of UNESCO, UN-Women and their partners.
UNESCO and UN Women joined efforts to develop a two-year programme that brings together gender equality and culture for development to empower the local community of Mafraq Governorate, one of the poverty pockets in Jordan. This project will support a group of women from Umm el-Jimal enabling them to acquire the necessary skills to improve their livelihoods through the opportunities provided by the efficient promotion and management of the archaeological site of Umm el-Jimal. The overall objective of the project relies on involving the local community in managing properly its heritage with its consequent increase of tourism and economic benefit for the village, as well as improved preservation of the site. This event will mark the beginning of the first phase of this project and will take place in Umm el-Jimal, with the involvement of the local community.
