The Side-Event, on Hydropower and its role in the water-energy nexus, will take place during the 21st Session of the IHP Intergovernmental Council. The collaboration between the International Hydrological Programme and the International Hydropower Association is longstanding and this event offers the opportunity to present recent developments in the field of hydropower, providing a global overview while focussing on specific topics such as education for hydropower operation and the greenhouse gases (GHG) status of freshwater reservoirs.
The side-event will begin by providing a global status report on hydropower deployment and the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, followed by presentations on the GHG status of freshwater reservoirs, Hydro informatics at UNESCO-Category 2 Centre “Itaipu Binacional” (Brazil), and education for hydropower operation.

The programme will conclude with an overview of the 2014 World Water Development Report with special focus on water and energy, closing with a 15 minute question and answer session.
