Follow-up to the Implementation of the UNESCO Action Plan for the Emergency Safeguarding of Syria's Cultural Heritage
UNESCO and the German Federal Foreign Office, in cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, are jointly organizing an International Expert Meeting with the objective of the follow-up to the implementation of the UNESCO Action Plan for the Emergency Safeguarding of Syria’s Cultural Heritage. It will take place from 2 to 4 June 2016, in the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany.
This expert meeting, organized in the continuity of the action launched since the beginning of the conflict in Syria, is rooted in UNESCO’s action to safeguard Syria’s cultural. It relies on two major activities held at UNESCO Headquarters and which favored the development of the UNESCO Action Plan for Syria: the High-level Technical Meeting for the Safeguarding of Syria’s Cultural Heritage (Paris, 29 August 2013) and the international expert meeting “Rallying the international community to safeguard Syria’s cultural heritage” (Paris, 26 to 28 May 2014). The meeting aims to take stock, two years after the release of the UNESCO Action Plan for safeguarding Syria's Cultural Heritage with the participation of international and national experts, of the progress made in its implementation (built, movable and intangible heritage) and identify gaps in its implementation. Furthermore, it will help to coordinate ongoing national and international documentation, damage assessment as well as capacity building efforts and to plan the next steps in the implementation of the UNESCO Action Plan for the Emergency Safeguarding of Syria’s Cultural Heritage, focusing on future emergency and protection plans.
