First meeting of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Task force focuses on Indigenous and Local Knowledge Systems
On behalf of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), UNESCO will convene the first meeting of the IPBES Task Force on Indigenous and Local Knowledge Systems. The meeting will take place from 16-20 June 2014 at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France.
At its second plenary meeting in December 2013, IPBES acknowledged the importance of indigenous and local knowledge to the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems. It also decided to promote a meaningful and active engagement with indigenous and local knowledge holders in all relevant aspects of its work. It decided to form a task force on indigenous and local knowledge systems to advance this work. The first meeting of the new task force will advance work on:
1. Procedures and approaches for working with indigenous and local knowledge systems;
2. A review of regional case studies;
3. The establishment of a roster and network of experts on indigenous and local knowledge systems;
4. A participatory mechanism for indigenous and local knowledge systems.
