In view of helping countries prevent violent extremism through education, UNESCO is developing Technical Guidance to help policy makers within ministries of education. The Guidance will help prioritize, plan and implement effective and appropriate education-related actions that can contribute to national efforts to prevent violent extremism.

In this context, UNESCO is organizing a consultation meeting with a small group of experts to identify the critical issues that should be addressed in the Guidance, specific actions that can be realistically undertaken by the Education Sector as well as success factors.

This work is being undertaken in line with UNESCO’s Executive Board Decision 197EX/46 on Education to prevent violent extremism, which encourages the Director-General of UNESCO to support capacity-building in this area. It furthermore seeks to support the UN Secretary-General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism (A/70/674 of 24 December 2015).
