Election of the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC)
During the 37th Session of UNESCO General Conference, a short session of the IGBC will be convened on 19 November 2013 in Room IV from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to elect its Bureau.
In accordance with Rule 3 of its Rules of Procedure, the IGBC will proceed with the election of a Chairperson, four Vice-Chairpersons and a Rapporteur who, together with the Secretary-General of the IBC, will constitute the Bureau of the Committee.
The election of the IGBC Bureau is scheduled as soon as possible after the election of new Member States to the IGBC by the 37th General Conference on 14 November 2013, so as to take advantage of the presence of representatives during the General Conference. As such, continuing and new Member States of the IGBC are invited to attend the election of the IGBC Bureau at the time indicated above. For continuing Member States of the IGBC, we should be grateful if you would please indicate the name and title of your designated representative(s) for this election to the Secretariat at your earliest convenience.
The working languages will be English and French. Furthermore, during its 8th Session in Paris (September 2013), the IGBC unanimously decided to suspend Rules 12.1 and 12.2 of its Rules of Procedure for the election of its next Bureau, and authorized the Secretariat to conduct this election in English and French only. In accordance with this decision, simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English and French for the election.
In order to facilitate the process of the IGBC Bureau election, we should be grateful if continuing and new Member States of the IGBC could consult with the each other within the electoral groups, as well as amongst the electoral groups, to reach consensus on possible candidates for the different positions of the Bureau. As is customary practice, there should be balanced geographical representation on the Bureau. If possible, please communicate the name(s) of possible candidates for the different positions of the Bureau to the Secretariat, preferably by 18 November 2013.
