This regional conference focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 5 "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls". It will take place from 23 to 25 November 2015, in San José, Costa Rica.

This initiative follows the advice of the Gender Working Group (GIG) of the UN System in Costa Rica, which is coordinated by the Social and Human Sciences Programme of UNESCO's Office in San Jose in 2015. The Group has identified the need to promote gender equality through the perspective of man’s identities and behaviors towards women.

The conference will open space to discuss gender equality, masculinities and the fundamental role that men and boys have in the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 5.

Its main objective is to explore the many regional programmes and initiatives on masculinities as a first step to establish the foundations for a future research project around these topics.

The conference will also help to identify trends, initiatives and programs that work with the subject of masculinities and work with men for gender equality in the Latin American region.
