Award Ceremony of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2017
Within the framework of the International Literacy Day, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes honour outstanding efforts of individuals, institutions, organizations or other entities that promote literacy.
Since 1967, UNESCO has awarded International Literacy Prizes to outstanding and innovative programmes that promote literacy. Throughout the years, the prestigious Prizes have rewarded over 480 initiatives undertaken by governments and NGOs across the world.
The Prizes are awarded annually at an official ceremony on International Literacy Day (8 September).
This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day which was established by the General Conference of UNESCO in 1966 following the recommendation of the World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, in 1965.
