ASPAC Roundtable on “Enhancing Inclusivity in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists’”
Based on the decision of the ASPAC plenary session, Electoral Group IV is organizing a round table on “Enhancing Inclusivity in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists”. This round table is a members-driven initiative which intends to highlight the importance of the subject, given the significance of intangible cultural heritage to facilitating intercultural dialogue and encouraging mutual respect for other ways of life, through the provision of a forum for discussion on enhancing the working methods of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage regarding the evaluation and inscription of elements on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
Recalling the purpose of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage to bring all nations together, it is a matter of concern that inscription of elements in the two ICH lists seems to have become a divisive rather than unifying factor, with particular problems relating to multinational nominations files. In a spirit of cooperation, it is proposed to facilitate and clarify the Rules of Procedure including, if necessary, the examination of the possibility of their amendment, to enhance the functioning of the Committee in order that it may more fully reflect the principles of the Convention.
