UNESCO Office in Moscow in partnership with the Russian Committee of International Council of Museums (ICOM Russia) are preparing the Regional UNESCO/ICOM Expert meeting for museum specialists from CIS countries “Strengthening the Social and Educational Roles of Museums as Vectors for Intercultural Dialogue and Enhancing their Links with the UNESCO Conventions”, which will be held in Moscow and Rostov the Great on 08–11 November 2014.

This expert meeting will be organized in accordance with UNESCO strategic objectives for protecting, promoting and transmitting heritage and with consideration of recommendations of the expert meetings conducted within the UNESCO/IFESCCO Pilot Project “Running a Museum – 21 Century” (2011-2014).

Expert meeting will be conducted on the basis of the All-Russian museum of decorative and applied arts and the State museum-reserve “Rostov Kremlin”.

This expert meeting will be organized in accordance with UNESCO strategic objectives for protecting, promoting and transmitting heritage and with consideration of recommendations of the expert meetings conducted within the UNESCO/IFESCCO Pilot Project “Running a Museum – 21 Century” (2011-2014).

Expert meeting will be conducted on the basis of the All-Russian museum of decorative and applied arts and the State museum-reserve “Rostov Kremlin”.
Expert meeting will focus on:

• Museum as basic cultural institute, which permit to preserve and develop cultural diversity
• Cultural diversity as an essential element for sustainable development
• Preservation of the intangible heritage as a ground for cultural diversity preservation
• Museums and museum-reserves as main expert organizations that preserve intangible cultural heritage
• Role of small nations and social groups in preservation of intangible cultural heritage
• Role of museums in preservation of World Heritage Objects of UNESCO WHL.
• Specifics of work – challenges and opportunities of museums, situated on territories of World Heritage Objects
• Development of new legal documents on the protection and promotion of museums– international and national levels

This Regional UNESCO/ICOM Expert meeting for CIS countries is directed at strengthening the social and educational roles of museums as vectors for intercultural dialogue and enhancing their links with the UNESCO Conventions. Expert meeting is prepared on the basis of recommendations of the expert meetings conducted within the UNESCO/IFESCCO Pilot Project “Running a Museum – 21 Century” (2011-2014). The program of the Expert Meeting in Moscow and Rostov the Great assumes the involvement of the leading specialists in the area of the cultural and natural heritage preservation, museum management as well as participation of the representatives of the of museums from the UNESCO Moscow Office’s cluster countries, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation.

In the framework of the Expert meeting three policy briefs and a package of basic recommendations will be prepared. They will focus on the following topics:

• Role of museums in promoting the principles of the UNESCO 1972 Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage;
• Role of museums in promoting the principles of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage;
• Role of museums in promoting the principles of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The materials of the Expert Meeting will be published in the electronic version and placed for free access on the UNESCO and ICOM Russia web-sites.
