The positive role that traditional and new media can both have in concretizing the culture of peace as a tangible reality to help communities live in harmony with their differences needs to be further promoted. To this end, new projects on media and information literacy and capacity-building for professionals and relevant community stakeholders are developed to counter the appeals of violence and the spread of conflicts, especially in regions potentially exposed to such realities.
Interactive Community Media for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence in South Sudan and Northern Uganda
Drawing on the breadth of UNESCO’s mandate by integrating the Culture, Communication and Information and Education Sectors, this project is in line with the Organization’s strategic priorities on Africa and Gender Equality and contributes to effective action to promote a culture of peace and non-violence, with a focus in post-conflict countries such as South Sudan and Uganda. Emphasizing on the use of interactive multimedia platforms for building and promoting the values and principles of a culture of peace and non-violence, the multiplier effect of ICTs is used to empower the capacity of the communities in South Sudan and Northern Uganda to discuss issues pertaining to peace, tolerance, intercultural dialogue, reconciliation and human rights, to connect leaders and citizens and to enhance debates among citizens, but also to strengthen the capacity of journalists and community groups in reporting these issues meaningfully.
The multi-actor participation with the involvement of media organizations, citizen reporters and community groups and their capacity-building facilitates the dissemination of messages/methodologies/tools to be developed in various networks. This is particularly enhanced through gender sensitive assessment of traditional practices and oral expressions and their usage in education and peace-building through radio programs, drama productions and advocacy radio spots.
Promotion of a culture of peace, non-violence, and intercultural dialogue through the local media, teacher training institutions and schools in vulnerable areas in the Andean region
This project is being implemented in border zones and/or in contexts of vulnerability in the countries of the Andean Region, including: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The objective is to deepen learning, teaching and dissemination of communicational products and messages promoting respect and full enjoyment of human rights and a culture of peace.
The project consists in a series of training workshops divided in four modules designed by local experts in order to transmit the concept of culture of peace based on regional needs, including : (i) Culture of peace, non-violence and inter-cultural relations; (ii) Project formulation; (iii) Strategies for learning a culture of peace; (iv) Journalism for peace.
This training applies a methodology that combines on-site workshops with activities on the virtual platform of the Culture of peace project, www.culturadepazunesco.org, where instructors and students can dialogue and discuss related topics. This platform also hosts the four afore-mentioned modules, guidebooks, textbooks and several references, as well as tasks home.
The training workshops are being conducted by the UNESCO Quito Office, in collaboration with universities of well-recognized prestige in the region with previous experience on culture of peace learning and civil society organizations, such as the Javeriana University of Colombia, the Jesuit University of Táchira in Venezuela, the Private Technical University of Loja, FLACSO-Ecuador, and the Machaqa Amawta Foundation from Bolivia.
